Pup PSA!

I'm sure most of you know this- but since I was surprised, I figure I should notify everyone else out there!

There are lots of foods dogs shouldn't eat. Whenever in doubt I've checked the Kentuckiana Pug Rescue web site, their list is:

alcoholic beverages
cherry pits
mushroom plants
peach pits
tea (caffeine)
tomato leaves and stems
avocados
chocolate
coffee
apple seeds
macadamia nuts
mustard seeds
rhubarb leaves
walnuts
apricot pits
moldy foods
onions and onion powder
salt
yeast dough
potatoes

I also know that garlic should be added, since it is similar in effect to onions. HOWEVER, in my Hungry Girl e-mail today (have you checked out hungrygirl.com? Oh you should!) I found out that GRAPES are bad!! The e-mail said they contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage. YIKES! We have actually given the little bits of grapes before. Raisins are the same as well. Just be careful dog-pawrents! I know we will be!

Although garlic does have a similar effect as onions, I have a dog recipe cookbook that says that garlic can be given in moderation to dogs as it is not as potent as onions. AND garlic is a natural flea repellent! The book also mentions artificial sweeteners, synthetic colorings, and tobacco.

That was a very informable post, thank you. You should also note that gum is very bad too.

Se I thought garlic was good for the dogs as long as it is in small amounts? I have a doggy recipe book as well and everything in there has garlic.

I just fed them tiny cubes of avocado the other night! eek!

Sugar free gum is VERY bad for them as well.

Murphy I think it's like uncooked potatoes. Cuz we get potatoes in our food too and it's fine... I think it's like the same as bread dough being bad, but regular cooked bread won't kill us.

We were shocked too when we heard not to eat the grapes someone at the pet store told us but it is nice to have that list for a reminder. Thank you.
